The Spa Experience at The Westin La Paloma Resort
The Westin La Paloma has been the Tucson foothills’ default answer to resort luxury since 1986 — and a 2023 top-to-bottom renovation has given it a convincingly fresh argument for that title. All 486 guest rooms now carry desert-toned interiors with textural surfaces and Sonoran-inspired details: calming, grounded, and a long way from generic chain territory.
The property spreads across 250 acres at the base of the Santa Catalina Mountains, roughly 25 minutes north of Tucson International Airport. The physical scale reads immediately. Six pools step across the grounds — from the adults-only mineral pool enriched with Dead Sea salt and framed by a waterfall, to the family complex where the 177-foot SlideWinder waterslide draws a predictable crowd. The 27-hole Jack Nicklaus Signature Golf Course frames the eastern edge, with driving range access included in the resort fee.
La Paloma Spa & Salon
The 2025 Arizona Travel Awards named La Paloma Spa the Big Market Spa of the Year — and 3,928 TripAdvisor reviews back this up with the kind of specificity that matters: named therapists appear repeatedly, a signal that individual quality holds consistently rather than averaging into an acceptable aggregate.
The treatment menu covers massage, advanced facials including HydraFacial, body treatments, red light therapy, and a full salon. Outdoor treatment areas bring the Santa Catalina Mountain views into the session. The SpaRator’s 7.3 notes the honest limits: no cold plunge, no hammam within the spa, and the resort’s mineral pool — though a genuine therapeutic asset — is a shared space rather than an integrated spa facility.
The wellness programming extends well beyond the spa. Morning meditation and intention-setting, yoga and Pilates classes, and astronomer-guided stargazing evenings all run regularly. The resort fee covers shuttle access to Sabino Canyon — one of Tucson’s premier canyon hiking destinations — and the Topgolf Swing Suite adds indoor golf simulation. Tennis (10 courts), pickleball, and the Jack Nicklaus course cover the active end.
Dining landed a strong 2024 upgrade: La Luz offers contemporary cuisine with panoramic mountain views, and Casa 71 Tequila Lounge serves handcrafted cocktails and live programming in the evenings. The $45 mandatory resort fee generates consistent friction in reviews, which is worth knowing in advance. What it covers — driving range, fitness classes, shuttle, $10 F&B credit, and children eating free — is substantial, but guests repeatedly note the charge feels imposed at a property where they expected it to be absorbed.
For active families and couples who want Tucson’s most complete resort infrastructure alongside a genuinely strong spa, La Paloma delivers in abundance. Guests seeking an immersive thermal wellness experience or a destination spa should look to Canyon Ranch (SpaRator 9.1, two hours east) or Miraval Arizona.
Who’s it for
Active families: The Westin Family Kids Club, SlideWinder waterslide, children eating free, and connecting rooms make this one of Tucson’s most fully equipped family resorts. Couples seeking a complete resort stay with a spa component rather than a spa-first stay. Golfers: the Jack Nicklaus Signature Course with driving range access in the resort fee is among Tucson’s strongest golf inclusions at this rate. Marriott Bonvoy members leveraging Westin-tier points on a complete resort.
Who’s it Not for
Guests whose itinerary centers on thermal spa immersion — no cold plunge, no hammam, and the mineral pool is shared resort infrastructure. Anyone who finds mandatory resort fees objectionable: the $45/night charge is unavoidable and consistently generates friction in reviews. Guests expecting walkable urban access: the Catalina Foothills location requires a car for everything off-property.
Is it Worth the Price
At $350–$550 peak plus $45 resort fee, the value depends on how much of the resort package you use. The spa packages ($200+ per-person spa credit bundles) are the most efficient configuration for spa-focused stays. Off-season (June–August, from $170) with full amenity access is the clearest value proposition in the Tucson resort set. Bonvoy points and Marriott’s frequent promotions (fourth-night free, resort credit bundles) offer the sharpest per-dollar value.
Pros and Cons
Pros: 2025 Arizona Travel Awards Big Market Spa of the Year. Named therapists across 3,928 TripAdvisor reviews — the strongest treatment consistency signal in the Tucson SpaRator set. Astronomer-guided stargazing programs. Mineral pool with Dead Sea salt enrichment. Jack Nicklaus 27-hole golf with a driving range in the resort fee. One of Tucson’s best family resort packages. Complete 2023 room renovation and 2024 dining refresh.
Cons: No cold plunge or hammam within the spa — the SpaRator’s Spa Facilities 6.5 reflects this. Mandatory $45 resort fee is the most consistent complaint across 3,928 TripAdvisor reviews. No walkable off-property amenities — a car is required for everything. Not a spa-first property; families and golfers are the primary audience.
Best Alternatives
For the most spa-immersive experience in the Tucson/Arizona inventory: Canyon Ranch Tucson (SpaRator 9.1, all-inclusive, two hours from Phoenix, Tucson foothills). For comparable Tucson foothills golf-and-spa: Loews Ventana Canyon (SpaRator 7.5, canyon setting, full spa, Tom Fazio golf). For a Westin-brand comparable with stronger spa thermal infrastructure: JW Marriott Starr Pass (SpaRator 8.0, west Tucson, Hashani Spa).
Booking Strategy
Book La Paloma Spa treatments at the time of reservation — therapist-specific requests (confirm via the spa directly) should be made at least a week out during peak season. The Spa Retreat packages (room + per-person spa credit) are the most efficient configuration for spa-centered stays and often available at comparable rates to standard rooms with add-on pricing. Bonvoy direct booking provides WiFi and points; Westin’s spa package promotions surface seasonally on the brand website. Off-season summer rates from $170 offer full resort access at roughly half the peak cost.
Best Room Types
King rooms with Santa Catalina Mountain views deliver the most cohesive Tucson experience — the ridgeline from a private balcony at dusk is La Paloma’s consistent visual signature. Select suites with a private patio Jacuzzi® add a private thermal element that the spa itself doesn’t provide — worth considering for guests who want hot-water access without a shared pool. Junior suites add living area space at a premium that makes sense for longer stays.
When to Go
January through April for the best combination of Tucson winter weather, peak programming, and full resort staffing. March draws the highest demand (spring break) — book two months ahead for preferred room types and spa appointments. October through December is the underrated value window: near-peak weather, lower rates than spring, and the Santa Catalinas at their most photogenic in autumn light. Summer (June–August, from $170) is the most aggressive value window; morning spa appointments and evening activities bracket the 100°F+ midday heat.
Best Spa Days
Arrive at La Paloma Spa early on a weekday morning, before the treatment calendar fills with weekend demand. The HydraFacial or a deep tissue massage with a named therapist request is the SpaRator’s recommended starting point — the treatment quality is what the 2025 Spa of the Year award reflects. Use the sauna and steam sequence before treatment. Transition to the mineral pool post-session — the Dead Sea salt enrichment makes it the closest thing to a cold-contrast thermal circuit the property offers. Book an astronomer-led stargazing session for the evening: the Santa Catalinas at dark, with professional astronomical context, is the experience the SpaRator’s Wellness Programs aim to capture.

This location is absolutely stunning! Staff was very friendly and helpful, the room was spotless and so relaxing. The resort was pretty big but remained very quiet and peaceful. We will absolutely be staying here again and can't wait to try out the golf course next time!
We stayed there for a weekend and it was a great getaway. Room was clean and quiet, resort has a wonderful view of the mountains
Wonderful place to celebrate a birthday. We live in Tucson but wanted to go some place special for dinner and spend the night to celebrate my birthday. We hadn’t been to La Paloma and have lived here for 10 years. The day of check in I received an email that asked if the hotel could do anything for us. I mentioned it was my birthday. What a nice surprise when we got to our room and found decorated cupcakes and fruit with a lovely note. Our dinner was incredible. The food was cooked to perfection and the servers couldn’t have been more attentive. One of our nicest birthday celebrations. Thank you La Paloma.

It's approximately 25–27 minutes (around 14 miles) from Tucson International Airport (TUS) and about 7 miles from downtown Tucson. Nothing is within walking distance, so a car or ride-share is recommended for exploring the city.
What is La Paloma Spa & Salon, and what treatments does it offer?
La Paloma Spa & Salon is the resort's full-service spa, open daily. The treatment menu covers massages (deep tissue, Swedish, hot stone, and more), classic and advanced facials including HydraFacial, body scrubs and wraps, nail services (manicures, pedicures), makeup, and hair salon services. The spa also offers red light therapy and features a steam room, dry sauna, relaxation lounge, and outdoor treatment areas.
Does the spa have thermal bathing facilities or a cold plunge?
La Paloma Spa has a sauna and steam room, but no dedicated cold plunge or private jacuzzi within the spa itself — a limitation noted by some guests. The resort's six outdoor pools include four hot tubs and a mineral pool enriched with Dead Sea salt, which partially compensate, though these are shared resort amenities rather than private spa facilities.
How many pools does the resort have?
Six pools in total. These include an adults-only mineral pool with a waterfall, a six-lane lap pool, a family pool featuring the 177-foot SlideWinder waterslide (one of Tucson's longest resort waterslides), and a children's pool. Four hot tubs are distributed across the complex.
What is included in the daily resort fee?
The resort fee is $45 per room, per night (plus tax) and covers: unlimited fitness classes and use of the fitness center, shuttle service to La Encantada Shopping Center and Sabino Canyon, a $10 daily food and beverage credit at on-property outlets, free meals for children under 12 from the children's menu (with a paid adult entrée, restrictions apply), and unlimited access to the driving range at La Paloma Country Club.
Is the golf course open to all resort guests?
Yes. The 27-hole Jack Nicklaus Signature Golf Course at La Paloma Country Club is available exclusively to resort guests and country club members. Golf rental equipment is available at the pro shop, and tee times can be booked up to 60 days in advance by calling 520-299-1500 ext. 2 with a confirmed room booking.
What dining options are available at the resort?
Four on-site dining outlets: La Luz, the signature restaurant serving contemporary cuisine with panoramic Santa Catalina Mountain views (breakfast, lunch, and dinner daily); Casa 71 Tequila Lounge, featuring handcrafted cocktails and live events including Whiskey Wednesdays and Margarita Nights; Sabino's Pool Bar & Grill for poolside dining and swim-up bar service; and La Vista Caffè for coffee and lighter fare. Vegan and vegetarian options are available across venues.
What wellness and activity programs does the resort offer?
Beyond the spa, the resort runs morning meditation and intention-setting sessions, yoga and Pilates classes, stargazing evenings guided by local astronomers, and group fitness classes. Outdoor activities include tennis (10 courts), pickleball, hiking access to Sabino Canyon via complimentary shuttle, and a Topgolf Swing Suite for indoor golf simulation.
Is the resort family-friendly?
Very much so. The Westin Family Kids Club welcomes children from 6 months to 12 years with supervised activities including arts and crafts, outdoor games, scavenger hunts, and dive-in movie events. The pool complex with its 177-foot waterslide is a particular draw. Children under 12 eat free from the kids' menu with a paid adult entrée.
Are pets welcome?
Yes. Well-mannered dogs up to 40 lbs are welcome at no extra charge. The resort provides dog beds and bowls on request and has designated grassy areas (Fiesta and Mesa Verde lawns) for pets. Dogs are not permitted in food and beverage outlets or pool areas (service dogs excepted).
Has the resort been recently renovated?
Yes. A multi-million-dollar renovation completed in 2023 fully redesigned all 486 guest rooms and suites, incorporating desert-toned, textural surfaces and Sonoran Desert-inspired design details. In 2024, the resort introduced La Luz restaurant and Casa 71 Tequila Lounge, and redesigned both La Vista Caffè and the main lobby.
What room types are available?
The resort offers 486 guest rooms and 25 suites across a range of configurations: king and double rooms with mountain, pool, or golf views; king suites; parlor suites; and select suites with private patios featuring a Jacuzzi®. All rooms include a private balcony or patio, a Westin Heavenly® Bed, a rainfall showerhead, a flat-screen TV, an in-room safe, a mini-fridge, and complimentary Wi-Fi.
What awards has the resort received?
Recent recognition includes the 2025 Travel + Leisure World's Best Award, 2025 Arizona Travel Awards Big Market Spa of the Year (for La Paloma Spa & Salon), 2025 TripAdvisor Travelers' Choice Award (top 10% of Tucson hotels), 2025 Arizona Foothills Magazine Best Escapes, 2025 Golfweek's Best Course You Can Play (Arizona), and multiple Condé Nast Traveler Readers' Choice Awards.
Is the resort accessible to guests with reduced mobility?
Yes. Wheelchair-accessible rooms are available, and accessible public spaces are provided throughout the resort. Contact the hotel directly to confirm specific accessibility requirements.
