The SpaRator™ Difference

Spa hotel scores built on structured data, independent research, and the experiences of real guests.

Not all spa hotels are created equal. A property with a full thermal hydrotherapy circuit, 12 treatment rooms, and Board-Certified practitioners occupies a different category entirely from a hotel with a massage room and a sauna. The SpaRator™ exists to make that difference clear.

Our proprietary scoring algorithm evaluates over 40 specific data points across six equally weighted categories. Every score reflects independent research, analysis of verified guest feedback, and — where we have it — first-hand knowledge of the property. The result is a consistent, comparable rating you can use with confidence.

Why We Built the SpaRator™

The Problem

Major booking platforms treat all spas equally — a hotel with a single treatment room gets the same label as a 70,000-square-foot dedicated wellness facility. That makes genuine comparison impossible and leaves travellers guessing.

Our Approach

We evaluate spa hotels against 40+ defined data points across six categories: treatments, facilities, wellness programmes, staff and service, overall experience, and value for money. Each data point is sourced from hotel information, multiple booking platforms, and verified guest reviews.

The Result

A transparent, consistent score from 0–10 that reflects actual spa quality — not marketing copy, not star ratings, not proximity to a pool. A 9.0 here means something specific. You can read exactly what on this page.

How the SpaRator™ Works

The SpaRator™ is a structured scoring algorithm. Each hotel is evaluated against the same defined set of data points, weighted and combined to produce a single overall score from 0–10. The process is consistent across every property we review — the same criteria, applied the same way, every time.

Individual category scores are equally weighted. No single category can inflate or mask weaknesses in another. A spa that excels in treatments but has poor facilities will score accordingly.

40+
Data Points Analysed Per Property

Six equally weighted categories. One clear, comparable score. The same methodology applied to every property we review.

Understanding SpaRator™ Scores

Each spa hotel receives a comprehensive score from 0–10. Scores are colour-coded to make quality tiers immediately readable at a glance.

9.0–10.0
Exceptional

A spa destination in its own right. Sets the standard for the category — comprehensive facilities, outstanding treatments, consistently excellent guest experience.

8.0–8.9
Outstanding

High performance across most categories with few shortcomings. A confident choice for spa-focused stays.

7.0–7.9
Excellent

A strong spa offering that exceeds most guest expectations. Notable strengths; minor limitations.

6.0–6.9
Very Good

Solid facilities with capable practitioners. A reliable spa experience with room for improvement.

5.0–5.9
Good

Competent facilities and services for straightforward wellness needs. Nothing exceptional.

4.0–4.9
Fair

Basic provision that meets minimum standards. Lacks the depth or quality to warrant a dedicated spa visit.

0.0–3.9
Poor

Limited facilities or significant quality concerns that materially affect the guest experience.

How We Research Each Review

Every SpaRator™ score is the output of a defined research process. Here is what goes into each review.

🏠

1. Property Data

Facility specifications, treatment menus, pricing, and operational details from the hotel's own website and official channels establish the baseline — what the property claims to offer.

🔍

2. Booking Platform Analysis

Cross-referenced across Booking.com, Expedia, Hotels.com, and TripAdvisor. Captures facility listings, photos, and independently submitted amenity data that supplements or challenges the hotel's own information.

3. Guest Review Analysis

Patterns across verified reviews on Google, TripAdvisor, and Booking.com inform the Experience and Staff & Service scores. We look for what guests consistently praise, flag, or return for — not isolated opinions.

📊

4. Scoring & Editorial Review

Data points are scored against the SpaRator™ criteria for each category, then combined into the overall score. All scores are reviewed for calibration against comparable properties in the same market before publication.

🔄

5. Continuous Updates

Spa hotels renovate, change management, and shift in quality. We monitor properties for significant changes and reassess SpaRator™ scores when the evidence warrants it. Guest reports and updated platform data both trigger reviews.

📋

Our Research Basis

The majority of SpaRator™ reviews are produced through structured desk research — property data, booking platform analysis, and verified guest review synthesis. Where first-hand property knowledge informs a review, this is reflected in the editorial copy.

Your Reviews Matter

The SpaRator™ is not just about us. It is about you.

Verified guest experience is one of six equally weighted categories in every score we publish. That means reviews left by real guests on Google, TripAdvisor, and Booking.com have a direct, measurable influence on how a property scores — not as a tiebreaker, but as a core input.

If you have stayed at a spa hotel recently, your experience has value that no amount of desk research can replicate. Leave an honest review on any of the major platforms and you are contributing to a fairer, more accurate picture of that property.

Want to tell us directly? Email us at info@spahotelfinder.com with your experience — the property, what impressed you, what fell short. We read every message. First-hand accounts from guests influence how we assess and reassess properties.

Spa Hotel Finder is editorially independent. We do not accept payment from properties for higher scores, and guest reviews cannot be managed by hotels through our platform. All experience data is drawn from independently verified public sources.

What the SpaRator™ Isn't

It is not an overall hotel rating. A property might carry a high SpaRator™ score and have average rooms, or vice versa. We evaluate spa and wellness facilities exclusively. The scoring algorithm analyses spa-specific data points only.

It is not influenced by advertising or partnerships. Properties cannot pay for higher scores. SHF carries affiliate booking links for reader convenience — these generate commission when used, but have no bearing on SpaRator™ scores. A hotel's score is determined by its facilities and guest experience, nothing else.

It is not based on simple averages. The scoring algorithm accounts for the relative distribution of data points within each category. A property with exceptional treatment variety but a minimal thermal suite will score differently from one with the reverse profile, even if both produce the same raw average.

It is not static. Spa hotels renovate, expand, change management, and shift in quality. We monitor properties for significant changes and reassess SpaRator™ scores when the evidence warrants it.

Based in Paris, France

Spa Hotel Finder is published by Blue Astoria Media Group Ltd, a London-based digital media company specialising in travel, lifestyle, and destination content.

The platform was founded by James Sinclair, a British travel writer and digital publisher who has spent over a decade covering travel and wellness across print and digital media, with a particular focus on the European and North American spa hotel market. He holds an Executive MBA and has been based in Paris for several years.

The SpaRator™ was developed to address a persistent gap in how spa hotels are evaluated online: broad aggregator scores that conflate genuinely exceptional wellness destinations with properties that happen to have a massage menu.

“The goal was simple: build the scoring system I wished existed when I was trying to find a spa hotel worth going out of my way for. Rigorous enough to mean something, honest enough to be useful.”

— James Sinclair, Founder

Trust & Transparency

The SpaRator™ is built on three principles: consistency, independence, and honesty about how scores are produced.

Consistency: every property is evaluated against the same criteria, the same data sources, and the same scoring framework. A 7.5 in Miami reflects the same standard as a 7.5 in Scottsdale.

Independence: SHF carries affiliate booking links for reader convenience. These are disclosed and generate commission when used. They have no influence on SpaRator™ scores. Properties are not informed of their scores before publication.

Honesty about methodology: the majority of SpaRator™ reviews are produced through structured desk research. Where first-hand property knowledge informs a review, this is reflected in the editorial copy. We do not fabricate site visit claims.
