Using the Rankings

How the scores work, how the Top 15 is built, and how to pick your hotel from it.

How is the Top 15 Spa Hotels list chosen?

Purely by SpaRator score: the fifteen highest-scoring hotels across everything we have reviewed, in descending order. Nobody hand-picks the list, no property can buy a place on it, and there are no editorial overrides. When a new review publishes with a high score, it enters the ranking automatically and the fifteenth hotel drops off. The same rule builds the top lists on our destination pages, so a hotel's position here always matches its score on its city page. If two hotels tie, they simply sit together at the same score. What you see is the current state of the scoreboard, nothing more curated than that.

What does a SpaRator score actually measure?

SpaRator is our 10-point rating built from verified data on the things that decide whether a spa stay is worth the money: spa and thermal facilities, treatment quality and range, wellness programming, rooms, service, and value. Scores are calculated from researched evidence, not guest star averages, and every hotel is assessed against the same framework so a 8.4 in Miami means the same as a 8.4 in Sedona. Each review shows the category breakdown behind the headline number, which is where the real information lives. The full methodology is public on our How SpaRator Works page.

What is the difference between Exceptional, Outstanding, and Excellent?

Those labels map directly to score bands: 9.0 and above is Exceptional, 8.0 to 8.9 is Outstanding, 7.0 to 7.9 is Excellent, and 6.0 to 6.9 is Very Good. In practice, the jump from Outstanding to Exceptional usually comes down to facility depth: the 9-plus properties tend to pair a full thermal circuit with genuinely distinctive treatments and programming, while an Outstanding hotel might excel in three categories and merely satisfy in the fourth. A Very Good hotel is still a hotel we would happily book for the right trip and budget; the bands rank ambition, not acceptability.

How often do the rankings change?

The rankings are live, not an annual list. They reorder whenever a new hotel review publishes or an existing review is refreshed and re-scored, and new hotels and destinations are added regularly. That means the Top 15 you see today can differ from last month's, which is the point: a static best-of list rots quietly while hotels renovate, change spa operators, or slip. Each review carries its own last-updated information, so you can see how current the underlying assessment is. If you are comparing options over a few weeks before booking, it is worth a second look before you commit.

How should I use the rankings to pick a hotel?

Start with the category scores, not the headline number. A hotel can rank high overall while scoring modestly on Value for Money, which matters if budget is the deciding factor; another might lead on Treatments but trail on Wellness Programs, which matters if you want hydrotherapy rather than a massage menu. Then think destination first: the Top 15 skews toward the strongest markets, so if you already know you want beach rather than desert, go through the destination pages above and compare within that market. The composite score answers "how good"; the breakdown answers "good at what."

Do hotels pay to be ranked here?

No. Properties cannot pay to appear, to improve their SpaRator score, or to influence what our reviews say. Scores are calculated from verified data, and editorial judgments are made independently of any commercial relationship. We earn money through booking referrals: when you click through to a partner site and book, we may receive a commission, at no change to your price. That model only works if you trust the rankings, which is exactly why the scoring is not for sale. The ranking above would look identical if every hotel on it refused to work with our partners.

Why is a well-known spa hotel missing from the list?

Because we have not reviewed it yet, not because we judged it unworthy. Coverage currently stands at 128 reviewed hotels across 11 US destinations, and it grows market by market: we research a destination in depth, review its hotels properly, and then move to the next, rather than thinly covering everywhere at once. A famous property in a destination we have not reached simply is not in the dataset yet. If a hotel is in a covered destination but absent, that usually means it did not meet the bar for inclusion in that market's reviewed set.

Can I book a hotel through this page?

You compare here and book through our partner platforms. Each review links out to established booking sites such as Booking.com, Expedia, and Hotels.com, whose live pricing and availability feed the rates you see on our pages. You pay exactly what you would pay going to those platforms directly; there is no markup and no fee added by us.
