Bernardus is a 1999 wine-country estate that added spa to its name, and the order matters. Twenty-eight acres of vineyard and gardens, a Michelin Two Key lodge, and the Carmel market’s one genuinely included thermal circuit — attached to its smallest luxury spa. (The tarot is real. Nobody mentions it.)
The Spa, Specifically: The Spa at Bernardus Lodge
The Spa at Bernardus Lodge runs about 5,300 square feet, and its facilities come with the resort fee: eucalyptus steam, dry sauna, and a warming pool held near 100 degrees, no treatment required — the only arrangement of its kind in this market. How many treatment rooms sit behind that circuit depends on which listing you trust (7 in one version of the resort’s third-party copy, 9 in another), and the spa’s own pages settle nothing. I have asked. The menu is garden-fed on paper: lemon verbena, lavender, and grape seed from the estate. On the page guests write, that story vanishes; exactly one review in 210 mentions the gardens feeding anything, and it was dinner at Lucia. It is the same silence I keep finding between spa marketing and guest record, from Joya’s Hammam to Pebble Beach’s gold facial. What guests actually champion is the 24-hour adults-only infinity tub (“paradise alone,” January 2025), and the steam-sauna-and-warm-water circuit itself. The Lodge at Pebble Beach is this market’s benchmark: the only Forbes Five-Star spa in the region and roughly four times Bernardus’s spa floor space. Bernardus wins the two arguments Pebble Beach cannot: access (circuit included with the stay versus a $145 minimum service) and price (winter from $563 against $1,315, both booking-engine checked). Carmel Valley Ranch’s Spa Aiyana, freshly renovated in May 2026 at double the square footage, gates its circuit behind treatments; Bernardus counters with inclusion. Refuge sells the pure silent circuit twenty minutes east. Bernardus is the estate play: best grounds in the Valley, friendliest access model, smallest spa.

Where is Bernardus Lodge, and how far is the airport?
On Carmel Valley Road, about 11 miles and 20 minutes inland from Carmel-by-the-Sea, and 25 to 30 minutes from Monterey Regional Airport. The valley usually stays sunny when the coast is fogged in. The property is remote by design: you drive to everything, or use the complimentary Mercedes loaner for up to four hours.
Is spa access really included with a stay?
Yes. The resort fee covers the spa's facilities: eucalyptus steam room, dry sauna, and warming pool, no treatment booking required. No other Carmel-market hotel includes its circuit; Pebble Beach gates its spa behind a $145 minimum service, and Carmel Valley Ranch requires a treatment.
How much is the resort fee, and does it show in the room rate?
It is $70 per night plus tax ($77.35 all-in), and no: it lands at checkout on top of the displayed rate. It buys real things (spa facility access, WiFi, yoga, tennis, bocce, croquet, EV charging, Mercedes loaner time), but a February test booking turned a $580 nightly rate into $727 all-in once the fee and taxes stacked.
How much is parking?
$30 per night, self-park or valet, and it is not in the resort fee. A March 2026 guest titled their review "Beautiful hotel but hidden costs let it down" over exactly this.
Does the spa add a service charge?
Yes: 23% on treatments per the resort's published policy, which also states the charge can be adjusted. One June 2025 guest reported 25% charged and described how awkward negotiating it down felt. Listed prices exclude the charge, so the $210 Swedish bills at $258.
