El Encanto opened on February 2, 1918, and for a century it has been where Santa Barbara goes to look at itself: the terrace above the Mission, the harbor below, the islands beyond. Orient-Express bought it in 2004 and spent seven years and $134 million rebuilding it for a March 2013 reopening; Belmond now runs it under LVMH ownership. The bones are the best in the market. The Spa, Specifically

Seven treatment rooms carry more range than the count suggests: wet rooms for body treatments, dedicated facial suites, a couples room, and locker areas holding both dry and wet saunas plus steam. Other than Bacara’s 42,000-square-foot flagship, it is the only spa in the corridor with any sauna variety at all.

The menu rotates seasonally around local and organic ingredients, anchored by the El Encanto Signature Scrub and the Aromastone massage, with a full hair and nail salon attached.

Two things a booking guest should know. First, the spa publishes no prices. That is unique among the market’s flagships, and worth a phone call before arrival rather than a surprise after.

Second, its class programming lists on ClassPass, which makes this the only Forbes Five-Star-lineage spa in the market a non-guest can enter for the price of a fitness credit. The facility is boutique-scale and makes no apology for it; between the saunas and the wet rooms, it is the most complete small spa in Santa Barbara.

Who’s Right, Who’s Wrong

Book El Encanto for the view and the quiet: couples who want the Riviera hillside, garden paths, and a genuine small spa at rates below every Five-Star-lineage rival. It is the market’s thinking-person’s luxury buy.

Book elsewhere if service consistency is what you are paying for. The recent review pattern (slow terrace, pool lapses, valet friction) is real, and Miramar currently executes at a level this property remembers rather than delivers.

Where It Sits in the Market

The Ritz-Carlton Bacara is the benchmark property for the Santa Barbara market, and El Encanto competes with it nowhere: this is the anti-resort, 92 bungalows against 358 rooms, a hillside against a bluff campus. The real comparison is Rosewood Miramar Beach, seven treatment rooms each and heritage against new-build, with El Encanto holding the sauna and wet-room depth Miramar’s spa lacks while conceding the beach, the triple Five-Star, and today’s service edge. San Ysidro Ranch shares the hillside-hideaway instinct at double the rate with no spa facility at all. El Encanto’s lane is its own: the view, the history, and the market’s most complete small spa.

The hotel is at 800 Alvarado Place on Santa Barbara's Riviera hillside, above the Mission — about 20 minutes from Santa Barbara Airport and two hours from Los Angeles International. Downtown is seven to ten minutes downhill by car. Plan on driving or valet-shuttling for essentially everything; the hillside walk defeats good intentions.
