The 280-square-foot Malaga entry room prices at $995 on a July Saturday. TripAdvisor's value subscore is 3.8 and Booking's 7.1, the lowest on either platform. Releases are real: a day-pass route, 20% off for locals Monday through Thursday, and membership.

About
Hotel Californian is a downtown design hotel, not a destination spa resort: 121 Spanish-Moorish rooms at the foot of State Street, a rooftop pool over the harbor, and Majorelle Spa tucked across the street. Walkability is the reason to book; the spa is the reason to book one afternoon, not the trip.
The Spa, Specifically: Majorelle Spa
Majorelle Spa runs about 2,500 square feet with four treatment rooms, including one couples suite, and men’s and women’s eucalyptus steam rooms. Its 2026 menu prices a 60-minute massage from $275, a 90-minute from $395, five facials at $265, and a two-hour Majorelle Signature at $545, all before a 22% service charge. Men’s and women’s eucalyptus steam rooms are the only wet facilities. There is no sauna in any spa-controlled source (steam versus sauna, explained). Nor is there a hammam (what a real hammam involves is a wet room this building never got); Majorelle’s 2019 director said they could not build “the hammams and the pools” of a true Moroccan bathhouse. In practice, the styling is Moroccan and the heat is steam only. It is the prettiest small spa in the market. In the 248 TripAdvisor reviews I parsed, every substantive 2025–26 spa mention is positive, with “small” as the recurring descriptor. Appointments require 24 hours’ notice and a 48-hour cancellation window; spa guests must be 18 or older, and non-hotel guests hold bookings with a credit card. Open daily 10 to 6.
Who’s Right, Who’s Wrong
Hotel Californian suits design-led, car-free couples who want Santa Barbara itself: the Funk Zone at the door, the train station a block away, and a very good massage or facial inside a stylish afternoon. The spa is for hours, not days. Book elsewhere if you need a thermal circuit, a kids’ pool, or a resort that absorbs its own event noise; Bacara is the spa-depth alternative 25 minutes west, and El Encanto trades the street for the Riviera view at the same $65 fee, with the same steam-only wet offer.
Where It Sits in the Santa Barbara Market
Hotel Californian sits at the opposite pole from The Ritz-Carlton Bacara, the Santa Barbara market benchmark: Bacara runs 42,000 square feet and 36 treatment rooms up the coast; Californian runs about 2,500 and four, and wins on walkability instead. One block away, Harbor View Inn charges no resort fee and $32 self-parking, which makes Californian’s taxed $74.23 fee the sharper downside of its postcode. For the Moroccan comparison, Omni Montelucia had a real hammam draw zero mentions in 259 reviews, while this spa draws 15 of 137 and the rooftop pool 39. Here the borrowing wins more than the real thing did.

Where is Hotel Californian, and how far is the airport?
Hotel Californian sits at 36 State Street, at the beach end of the Funk Zone, about a 15-minute drive from Santa Barbara Airport and about two hours from Los Angeles International. Amtrak is one block away, Stearns Wharf and the beach are a block, and the wine-tasting rooms are at the door. This is the one luxury spa hotel in the market a guest can plausibly do without a car.
Does Hotel Californian have a real hammam?
No. Moroccan influence is tile and scent, not thermal architecture. The spa's 2019 director put it plainly: the property could not build "the hammams and the pools" of a true Moroccan bathhouse. Translation? Moroccan styling, steam only.
Is there a sauna at Majorelle?
No sauna appears in the spa's own copy, the 2019 director interview, or any of the 262 guest reviews I read. Some third-party directories list one, but the wet facilities are men's and women's eucalyptus steam rooms only. No downtown Santa Barbara hotel spa currently documents a dry sauna; for a real thermal circuit you are driving to Bacara.
How much do treatments cost?
Majorelle's 2026 menu prices a 60-minute massage from $275 to $295, a 90-minute from $395 to $435, five facials at $265, and the two-hour Majorelle Signature at $545. Oasis Renewal Reflexology runs $275 for 60 minutes, and the menu floor is $255 for the 60-minute cranial sacral treatment. A 22% service charge is added at checkout, so the $275 hour bills $335.50.
What is the spa membership?
Membership runs $600 a month with a $225 initiation fee, and it includes two 60-minute treatments a month, fitness center access, Tan-Tan pool access with blackout dates, 20% off additional treatments and retail, ten guest passes a year, discounted valet, and 15% off rooms and dining. Adding family or friends runs $500 a month. It is the only hotel-spa membership model in the Santa Barbara market.
Can non-guests book the spa?
Yes. Majorelle splits its booking portal between hotel guests and day guests, and ResortPass sells rooftop day passes and massage or facial bundles that add steam-room access and a glass of champagne. ResortPass prices did not render in US dollars for this refresh, so price them in the spa's booking portal before assuming.

How much is parking?
Overnight valet is $65 with in-out privileges; daytime valet is $35 without. A public garage on site charges $65 overnight with no in-out and gives the first 75 minutes free. Tesla and EV chargers are complimentary for valeted cars on a first-come basis.
Which rooms are quiet?
Ask for a room away from the eastern side and not directly under the rooftop deck. Train horns reach eastern rooms in 6 of 137 recent reviews, and rooftop DJ events reached premium rooms below the pool deck in two TripAdvisor and two Yelp reviews during 2026.
Is the hotel family-friendly?
Children are welcome with an adult and rollaways cost $75 a night, but the spa is 18-and-over, there is no kids club, and the rooftop hosts DJ events that guests in 2026 heard from their rooms. Families wanting a kids' pool and grounds will do better at Bacara or the Hilton Beachfront.
What restaurants are on site?
Dinner now runs to The Knock Kitchen + Cocktails, opened mid-July 2026 in the former Blackbird space and serving Tuesday through Saturday. Goat Tree runs the all-day café, Djinn the cocktail bar, The Society: State & Mason the wine room, and Tan-Tan the poolside service.
Which is better: Hotel Californian or El Encanto?
Pick one: the city or the view. Californian gives you walkable Santa Barbara, newer rooms, and the prettier small spa. El Encanto gives you the Riviera panorama and garden bungalows; on wet facilities the two are level, eucalyptus steam only at both, and El Encanto opens its steam room to every hotel guest. Book Californian if you are car-free. If you want to hide from the world for a weekend, climb the hill to El Encanto.
When is the cheapest time to stay?
Winter midweek, when the Malaga entry room prices from $559 against $995 on a July Saturday. That same room runs $659 on a January weekend, and a late-September Saturday prices as peak at $990. Because the $65 fee is flat, it takes the largest bite out of the cheapest nights.
