Bacara opened in 2000 as a $222 million standalone bet that Santa Barbara’s coast could support a grand resort — and spent seventeen years as exactly that before Ritz-Carlton took the flag in September 2017. What the conversion bought was consistency of brand, not of place: this remains a Spanish Colonial campus on 78 acres of Goleta bluff, closer to UC Santa Barbara than to State Street, with the biggest spa between Los Angeles and San Francisco at its center.
The Spa, Specifically
The scale is the story, and it is not close: 42,000 square feet across four stories, 36 treatment rooms, a redwood sauna, a eucalyptus steam room, a cold plunge, a whirlpool, an adults-only pool, fireside lounges, and a rooftop terrace above the Santa Barbara Channel. No other spa in the market comes close to a quarter of it.
The menu leans on Elemis technology facials (80 minutes from $634) and broad massage formats (80 minutes from $482), all carrying an automatic 20% service charge. The genuinely new element is the Aescape studio, an AI-guided robotic massage from $39 for 30 minutes, booked by app, one of the first such installations at a five-star California property. It reads as a gimmick until you notice what it does: it puts a spa visit at Bacara below the price of a Goleta strip-mall massage.
Day passes through ResortPass and Marriott’s iDayPass open the pools and wet areas to non-guests, all of it 18-and-over.
Who’s Right, Who’s Wrong
Book Bacara if the spa itself is the destination; nothing else on this coast offers thermal variety, treatment capacity, and an adults-only pool at this scale, and the day-pass and Aescape routes make it the market’s most accessible luxury spa as well as its largest. Book elsewhere if you are buying Santa Barbara: the town is a 25-minute drive each way, and the fee stack ($55 resort, $70 valet, 20% spa service charge) prices the stay well above what the uneven service record supports.
Where It Sits in the Market
Bacara is the benchmark property for the Santa Barbara market; every SHF review in this hub positions against it. The pattern is scale against polish. Rosewood Miramar Beach runs one-fifth the treatment rooms but holds the Forbes Five-Star double for hotel and spa, sits on a genuine swimming beach, and out-delivers Bacara on service consistency. El Encanto offers the Riviera hillside view and a seven-room boutique spa; Hotel Californian owns downtown walkability. None of the three can host a full spa day at Bacara’s breadth, and Bacara cannot lend a guest any of their sense of place.

Where is the Ritz-Carlton Bacara, and how far is the airport?
Bacara is at 8301 Hollister Ave in Goleta, on the coast about 20 to 25 minutes west of downtown Santa Barbara. Santa Barbara Airport (SBA) is roughly 15 minutes away, making this one of the shortest airport-to-spa runs of any luxury resort in California. From Los Angeles International, allow about two hours for the 95-mile drive up the 101.
Is Bacara actually in Santa Barbara?
Technically no — the resort sits in Goleta, and the "Santa Barbara" in its name is branding rather than geography. Downtown State Street, the Funk Zone, and the harbor are all a 20-to-25-minute drive east. Guests who book expecting to stroll into town discover a car is involved in every trip.
Can I use the spa without booking a treatment?
Yes, two ways. Hotel guests can buy spa-access passes, and non-guests can book day passes through ResortPass or Marriott's iDayPass — some bundle the pools, others pair spa access with a 45-minute Aescape robotic massage. All spa and day-pass access is 18 and over. A booked treatment includes full spa amenity access on the day.
What is the Aescape robotic massage?
An AI-guided massage table that delivers back, glute, and hamstring work without a human therapist — 30 minutes from $39, 45 from $54, 60 from $69, booked through the Aescape app. It is a fraction of the human-treatment price and one of the first robotic-massage installations at a five-star California resort.
How much are spa treatments?
Published "starting at" rates run around $482 for an 80-minute massage and $634 for an 80-minute Elemis Expert Tech facial, before the automatic 20% service charge. Fifty-minute treatments run lower, and the spa has periodically offered Monday–Thursday locals' rates around $205. Treat all figures as floors, not quotes — peak-day pricing rises.
Does the spa add a service charge?
Yes — a 20% gratuity is added automatically to spa treatments. Factor it in when comparing against other Santa Barbara spas, because at Bacara's price points it adds roughly $96 to an 80-minute massage.
Is there a resort fee?
Yes, $55 per room per night, covering fitness and yoga classes and sporting equipment. Valet parking is separate at $70 per night, and no complimentary self-parking option is advertised.
Is the resort family-friendly?
Yes — a children's pool, family rooms, and a large campus make it one of the area's most workable luxury family stays. The split is deliberate: the spa, its pool, and day passes are 18-plus, and the fitness center is 16-plus, so the adult and family zones rarely collide.
How many restaurants are on site?
Six dining venues, from the signature oceanfront room to casual poolside service. Guest reviews praise the settings and flag inconsistency in service pace and value — breakfast in particular draws recurring complaints about slow service at roughly $50 per adult.
Which is better: Bacara or Rosewood Miramar Beach?
They are opposite propositions. Bacara has the Central Coast's largest spa — 42,000 square feet against Miramar's seven treatment rooms — plus bigger grounds and a lower entry rate. Miramar holds Forbes Five-Star ratings for both hotel and spa, sits on a real swimming beach in Montecito, and delivers more consistent service. Scale and value favor Bacara; polish and location favor Miramar.
When is the cheapest time to stay?
December and September generally carry the lowest rates, with entry-level rooms surfacing near $520 to $960; summer weekends run $1,000 to $1,900 before fees. Monday and Tuesday arrivals price lowest within any week, and the May–June marine layer ("May Gray," "June Gloom") makes late-spring mornings gray but afternoons reliably clear.
