Auberge du Soleil started as a restaurant in 1981 and added rooms in 1985 — and the order of operations still shows. The terrace and the table are the point; the inn exists so dinner never has to end. Four decades on, it remains the property every romantic Napa itinerary is measured against.

Book Auberge du Soleil for the occasion: anniversaries, proposals, the milestone dinner with a soak beforehand. Food-and-view-first couples get the valley’s most famous terrace, a 17-year Michelin kitchen, adults-only quiet, and a fee posture (no resort fee, free valet, open soaking pools) that respects the rate.
Book elsewhere if the spa is the trip: six boutique treatment rooms with an ordinary-at-the-price reputation cannot anchor a wellness itinerary, and guests-only access means you cannot even sample it without committing to $1,200+ nights. Spa-first travelers belong at Meadowood or Solage.
Where It Sits in the Market
Meadowood, the Napa benchmark, is the direct inversion: its spa is the valley’s only Five-Star while its resort remains half-rebuilt — Auberge du Soleil is the whole, polished property whose spa is the weak link. Against Four Seasons Napa Valley, its fellow Five-Star hotel, Auberge wins on setting, dining tenure, and fee honesty while Four Seasons runs the better spa hardware.
